For the first time since 2013, you’ll be able to experience a taste of Sónar in Japan this year.
This June, Sónar Sound and Sónar+D return to Tokyo as part of NU Festival, which takes over Takanawa Gateway City on 26th, 27th and 28th June. The venues are in one of Japan’s largest and most dynamic urban developments, with a train station surrounded by residential, cultural and commercial buildings, creating a seamlessly connected urban environment. To inaugurate this new district, NU Festival will bring future-facing art and technology to Tokyo across all three days.
Sónar has collaborated on two parts of the festival’s multidisciplinary programme. Firstly, as part of the NU Live musical programme, we’re bringing back Sónar Sound with a specially prepared programme of live performances and DJ sets. The full lineup has been released today (more details are available at the NU Festival website).
Actress | Actress & Suzanne Ciani present Concrète Waves | COLA REN | Daito Manabe live | DJ Krush | Grandbrothers live | Nathan Fake live | Two Shell | William Basinski “Passing the Cup of Sorrows” | Kyomi | Minna-no-Kimochi (Downtempo Set) | Meitei live
Secondly, NU Art, in collaboration with Sónar+D, will take place at MoN Takanawa: Museum of Narratives, Tokyo’s newest museum (opened this March), entirely dedicated to digital art and culture. The programme - which will also be announced soon - will feature cutting-edge art and technology from Japan, Europe and beyond.
The collaboration with NU Live and NU Art are the first steps in a project which will see Sónar return to Tokyo in the next few years. We’ll be announcing more details and events very soon, so watch this space.
