Sónar has always been about singular moments, and it’s hard to think of a more extraordinary pairing than Darren Cunningham - aka Actress - and Suzanne Ciani. Cunningham’s self-styled ‘r&b concrète’ is smudged, decayed and urban, influenced by Detroit techno, hip-hop culture, and the hardcore continuum; in contrast Ciani’s pioneering work with the Buchla synthesiser is electronic music at its most fluid and organic. Yet dig a little deeper and you’ll hear uncanny similarities: both artists are sonic world-builders with a meticulous attention to detail, and a shared appreciation for transposing classical forms into electronic music. Sónar 2025 will be the perfect stage for a collaboration that few might have dreamed up, but which also makes perfect sense.
