The multi-faceted artist rethinks the sound of the rave, hacking warehouse-ready techno with diverse samples and references
Genre-defying DJ, philosopher poet, acclaimed visual artist, cyberpunk … Plenty of artists label themselves ‘multidisciplinary’, but Juliana Huxtable is one of the few who lives up to the label. Technology, and its creeping impact on our intimate lives, is the focus of their artistic practices; as a DJ, they turn the tables, deploying technology to break down barriers and hack its own code. Warehouse-ready techno and rave classics are spliced with samples - everything from hip-hop to hyperpop - applying the principles of reblogging to the DJ set. Hypnotic, ecstatic, and still firmly forward-looking, Juliana’s vision of the rave is part parallel reality and part collective seance.
